Tackling the tricky subject of birders and bird photography was fascinating… and, similar to my personal experience, it was no surprise to discover the goodwill in the birdwatching community towards all the different ways folks choose to enjoy birds. I also had the pleasure of a city birdwatching trip with inspiring amateur photographer Rudy Chodankar whose stunning pics illustrate the feature.

I really enjoyed this in Birdwatching magazine, and I would love to see a firecrest – had no idea they could be found in Greenwich Park until I read your piece. I’ve spent many an hour in London Wetlands hides & am always self conscious abt the noise I make even when just setting up my scope! I do agree that most photographers and scope/binocular users are pretty considerate and generous with sharing their sightings – the biggest noise is often the excitement of the many children who visit, and it’s hard to complain abt that!
Delighted you enjoyed it & wishing you luck with finding a Firecrest. I’d recommend getting really familiar with their call/song…
